Refining & Stabilization Protocols: The Mirror Finish

The transition from deep correction to absolute clear-coat clarity. Learn how to completely remove the working haze left by wool and stabilize the surface to eliminate holograms under any light source.

After the initial rotary + wool pass, the surface is free of deep scratches, but it is left with microscopic haze or cutting marks. At restoreLab, we treat this as an intermediate condition that requires a two-stage stabilization process. In this guide we detail the exact parameters of each pass — machines, pads, speeds and pressures — along with the inspection protocols and the adjustments for the least forgiving finishes: solid black and acrylic.

Second Pass: Smoothing the Cut Pattern

The goal of this stage is to reduce the working marks left by wool, preparing the clear coat for the final gloss. This dramatically reduces the amount of time the dual action (DA) polisher needs on the next step.

What exactly is that haze? Under magnification it is micro-scratches 1 to 3 microns deep left by the wool fibers. Individually they are invisible, but together they scatter light and steal saturation from the color: a black car that has been corrected but not refined looks grey under the midday sun.

Medium-cut foam works differently from wool: instead of tearing material away with fibers, it levels it with its open-cell structure. Our rule is never to jump more than one aggressiveness level between stages: medium foam can erase the wool pattern; a finishing pad cannot.

  • Speed: 1.7–1.9
  • Pressure: Around 12 kg
  • Time: 30–50 seconds per 40×40 cm section using a horizontal "snake pattern"
  • Important: Refresh add-on plastic trim pieces (moldings, covers) carefully, without excessive pressure, since the clear coat layer there is minimal.

Third Pass: Final Stabilization (The Scalpel)

Here we use a dual action (DA) polisher to bring the clear coat into a "space-grade" finish — perfectly clear, with zero holograms.

The DA owes its hologram-free finish to its eccentric orbit: the spindle traces a 12–21 mm circle while the pad rotates freely, so no point on the surface ever receives the same trajectory twice. It is random geometry versus the rotary's fixed circular path — which is why the rotary leaves holograms and the DA erases them.

The DA's weak point is pad stall on curves and edges: the pad stops rotating and merely vibrates, polishing at half efficiency. We mark the backing plate with a marker line to monitor rotation out of the corner of the eye; if the line freezes, we correct the contact angle.

  • Pressure: 0–1 kg (the machine works under its own weight)
  • Speed: Maximum (6), as long as the pad lies flat against the panel
  • Coverage area: A DA allows you to work larger sections at once (up to 80×80 cm)
  • Movement pattern: 2–3 repetitions of horizontal and vertical "snake patterns" over 60–90 seconds

Working Protocol for Solid Black Paint and Acrylic

Solid black non-metallic paint and acrylic finishes are the most demanding materials in our lab.

Solid black is unforgiving because it has no metallic flake to scatter light and distract the eye: every micro-mark stands exposed. A finish that would pass as perfect on silver grey shows holograms from three meters away on black under a harsh August sun.

Holograms are the fingerprints of an amateur. True gloss appears only when the clear coat becomes optically level and fully stabilized.

Acrylic During polishing, the pads will take on the color of the vehicle because the pigment is mixed into the coating. This is normal — just clean the pads more frequently with household soap.
Solid Black If the standard combination still leaves holograms, the protocol changes: replace the finishing pad every 2–3 panels, reduce the DA speed to 2–3 and shorten the working cycle to 15–20 seconds. In extreme cases, use a primer polish (CarPro Essence) and ultra-soft white pads.

How Do We Verify the Result? The Inspection Protocol

Finishing polishes contain oils that fill micro-defects and lend a temporary gloss that vanishes with the first wash. That is why no section is signed off without a panel wipe: isopropyl alcohol diluted to 10–15%, applied with a clean microfiber, which strips the clear coat bare and shows its true state.

Inspection is done under three light sources, because each reveals different defects: the 5000–6500 K handheld LED pulls out holograms, diffuse workshop light shows gloss uniformity, and direct sunlight — the ultimate judge in our climate — reveals absolutely everything. A truly stabilized clear coat withstands the midday sun without a single cobweb.

  • Panel wipe: 10–15% IPA in demineralized water, 350–400 g/m² microfiber
  • Inspection light: 5000–6500 K LED at a 30–45 degree angle to the panel
  • Final verdict: direct sunlight with the panel at ambient temperature

Why Does Panel Temperature Change the Protocol?

Finishing polishes are formulated to work with the panel between 20 and 45 °C. Below that, the abrasive does not break down and the cycle drags on; above it, the solvents flash off early, the polish dries out within 20 seconds and leaves marks instead of removing them.

As a mobile service across Sant Cugat and the Barcelona area, we manage this daily: in summer we work under a canopy or in a garage, let each panel cool between stages and shrink the section size if the polish starts drying mid-cycle. Stabilizing on a hot panel is the perfect recipe for manufacturing fresh holograms.

What Comes After Stabilization?

Freshly stabilized clear coat is at its most receptive: optically flat and chemically clean after the panel wipe. This is the ideal window — hours, not days — to apply protection: a sealant, a ceramic coating or PPF. Every hour that bare clear coat spends outdoors accumulates contamination that would have to be removed all over again.
